The Liver Function Test (LFT), also called Liver Panel 1, is an uncomplicated blood test that assesses the performance of your liver. Though LFT is the accepted medical terminology, Liver Panel 1 is the lab's designated name for the same test which typically measures various liver enzymes, liver proteins and liver substances to diagnose or follow liver disease. The test aims to allow clinicians to diagnose and monitor liver conditions such as hepatitis and fatty liver or possible liver damage from medications, quickly.
Process
- A small blood specimen is collected from your vein by your healthcare provider
- The specimen is sent to the lab and the staff perform all necessary tests required to generate your results.
When to Get Tested
You should have an LFT test if you have symptoms such as abdominal pain, fatigue, or jaundice, or if you are at risk due to hepatic infection history, alcohol consumption, obesity, or family history of liver disease. An LFT is also typically ordered to monitor a diagnosed liver condition, and/or for the monitoring of medication.
Sample Type
Blood sample: 2–3 mL to be drawn from a vein in a serum separator tube.
Test Preparation
Fasting for 8–12 hours may be advised. Avoid alcohol and inform your doctor about any medications or supplements.
Understanding Your Result
High enzyme levels may signal liver cell injury, while low protein levels suggest reduced liver function. If your results are abnormal, your doctor may recommend further testing, lifestyle changes, or treatment depending on the underlying cause.
