An HIV test checks for Human Immunodeficiency Virus in the body, using either blood or oral fluid. Testing is very important for early detection; it reduces the risk of spreading HIV to others. It potentially protects sex partners from HIV, and allows for timely initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART) as treatment.
Process
- A small sample of blood or oral fluid is collected.
- The sample will be tested for HIV antibodies, antigens, or RNA.
- A rapid test may give results in as little as 20 minutes.
When to Get Tested
Everyone 15 years and older should get tested at least once. People who engage in high risk activities (e.g., unprotected sex or multiple partners) should be tested more often.

Preparing for the Test
Typically, there is no preparation for an HIV test, and no fasting or stopping medications is necessary.
Understanding Your Results
A "negative" result indicates that the person was not infected with HIV at the time of testing, however a follow-up test may be necessary if one thinks they may have recently been exposed to HIV. A "positive" result will be followed by testing to confirm the diagnosis and care from an expert in HIV care.
